1. What where some of your design solutions to the theme Scientific?
My design solution for scientific that i really wanted to concentrate on was evolution. I also wanted to choose something that had to do with animals. So I chose to to the evolution of cameras, showing the old pictures they took along with the new pictures. Then for my studying of animals I decided on the animal of the octopus. To make it more scientific I had the octopus be in a observation tank.
2.      How beneficial were the mini lessons in the success of your project. If they were not beneficial please explain as well.
The mini lessons were very beneficial to me. They helped me fine tune my pen techniques, charcoal skills and pencil shading. They helped me work on these skills because I had not used these mediums since last semester, and they helped me work on improving my skill set. They also let me practice these skills before doing them on my final project.
3.      How did you show contrast in your work?
I showed contrast on my work by using the effect of black on white. This made the black spots really pop off the page against the white page. I also used contrast by using different pen techniques throughout my piece. Making each part of the drawing have a different texture and in turn making them each pop and contributing a important part to the piece.
4.      What medium did you decide to use? Why did you choose this medium over the others?
I chose pen for the medium of the project. I use this medium because use can do so many different things with it. I also wanted to challenge my self because with pen you can not erase any mistakes you make. I also think that if you master the pen, you can achieve better shading overall, and you can add detail to every part of your work.
5.      What techniques did you use to create this work?
For this project I used pen techniques. The two main pen techniques I used where hatching, and stippling. I used a basic black pen to create the different values on my final project, which consisted of  having one old camera with a new camera and in the background having two photos going from the old fashion used to the new fashion, through photography.
6.      We encourage risk taking in art. Risk taking can be as simple as trying a new technique or learning about a new medium to as complex as trying something totally new.  Did you take any risks with this project? Explain.
I took a major risk, in my opinion with using pen for this project. I also took a risk with using stippling  because it is harder to do and takes more time. The reason I think that using pen is a rick is because when you use other mediums, like pencil and charcoal, you can erase . However, when you use pen if you make a  major mistake or even a tiny one you cant do anything about it, and you might have to start over.
7.      Discuss your overall experience with this project.
I had a really fun time with this project. I had a lot of fun with coming up with the idea that incorporated contrast with including a scientific aspect in it. I also had fun exploring the different pen techniques, like stippling and hatching.  For me the best part of a project is coming up with an amazing idea that you get to bring to life using your artistic skills. I also had fun exploring different ways to bring in contrast with my piece. Overall, this project helped me explore my creativity and grow as an artist.

Pen Techniques

Today we learned  about and practiced pen techniques. There are three types of pen techniques, hatching , stippling, and invented. Hatching is adding or decreasing the amount of lines to indicate value. Cross hatching is adding lines that cross each other to add value. If you add more line the darker the value it and the less lines, the lighter the value is. Stippling is adding or subtracting the amount and size of the number of dots drawn to indicate value. Lastly Invented is adding random lines that you make up to add or subtract value. Again the more lines the darker the value is and the less lines the lighter the value is.
