For this project I used: newspaper, tissue paper dye, acrylic paint, and a photo transfer. The photo transfer was new to me, becuase I had never used this skill in a art piece. What you do for a photo transfer is you tape over a picture from a magazine, a photograph or one that you printed out and make sure there are no air bubbles in it. Then you press the back of the picture into the tape to make sure it is stuck on there. Then you let the picture soak in water and when its completely soaked, you peel off the photo and the ink transfers to the tape. I also used tissue paper dye which you get out of the tissue paper by wetting it with water. I gained a lot of familiarity with this medium becuase I used it through out my project, using it to create a night sky putting the darkest colors at the top. Also I used it to create the fire coming from the wold that was howling in my piece, which was my interpretation of a nightmare.

Did you try something that you weren't sure about as part of this project?
Did you pick a material or technique that was new or different over something that was familiar?

I took a risk with the Acrylic paint I used to create the claw marks. I was originally scared to use paint becuase it is my weak spot when talking about art, also I was afraid because with paint you can't erase it so if I messed up it was permanent. I picked this material over drawing the claw marks, because I really wanted the claw marks to stand out and I thought painting them in red would have this effect. I also used a photo transfer which I was scared to use at first becuase I didn't want to get any air bubbles and I didn't know if the ink was going to transfer all the way on to the tape.

When did you step back and analyze you work during this project? 
Did you consider how ideas would work before you tried them?

I stepped back and analyzed my work when I finished painting the claw marks and getting half of the night sky on the page. After looking back at my work I thought I needed something more in the bottom right hand quarter of my piece. After consulting my friends and my art teacher I decided to continue my night sky all the way down the page. I also continued the black on the bottom of the wolf photo silhouette to make the ground of my piece go across the page. Before I did this I asked my friends again to make sure it would look alright with my piece to make sure it wouldn't pull focus from my wolf silhouette picture which is the main spot of focus in my art piece.

Sticky situation - Im Melting!

I used my own ideas for this project. I wanted to in corporate some sort of flow into my project. So I chose two ideas. A butterfly flying in the rain and Popsicles melting. I chose the Popsicle idea. And I made it orginal by having a Popsicle melting and having different types of Popsicle melting on the ground with different complementing colors. I used my sources to get a reference of how to draw a Popsicle and then basing that for how to draw a melting Popsicle.

I learned from this project how to mix different values of paint. And this skill allowed me to mix and blend the different values of the paints I needed and made it look like a smooth transistion from one color to the next. I gained skills with familiar materials with the acrylic paint. It allowed me to practice the skill of blending paints through out my painting and in different directions. 

I had a challenge with finding a color scheme for my Popsicles and the background color. I solved this problem by asking for help from mrs rossi and my classmates. I dicided to go with a pink salmon color for the back ground and a teal color for the melting Popsicle. I also had a little trouble figuring out a way to make the acrylic pair look like Popsicle melting juice. I eventually figured out that if I add water to the paint it would look like the Popsicle juice.  Although my project did take an unexpected turn because I had orignally wanted to make the background yellow but I had to change it because my darker shade for my white part of my red white and blue Popsicles was yellow to get a creme color. 

Up Close and Personal Project- Emphasis

 

Artists solve problems:

I responded to the problems that I had by incorporating new methods of using the coloring pencils. For example I found that if I pressed as hard as I could that value still was not a dark enough value. I solved  this problem by using darker color pencils I used purple for my dark value for the red on the crown of the rooster. This mistake and the correction did make my piece a lot better. It added a 3D effect  to my piece and added a realistic effect. The color purple added a new color In my color scheme. I was able to contrast the color purple with turquoise and mint colors in the background. I had not planned to do a complementing color as the background and I think the back ground complementary color really added a element of constraint and emphasis to the rooster.

Artists Reflect:

I analyzed my progress on this project when I was done with the crown of the rooster before I added the purple as the dark value. I analyzed the piece and then realized that I need a darker value to emphasize the values. So after I realized this I tried different dark values. I tried dark brown and black but none of these colors worked with my color scheme. Then I tried dark purple and this color worked for the red color I chose for the crown and values in the feathers. 

Artist Creates Original Work:

I used references of chickens and roosters and combined the pictures. For my piece I choose a chicken pose and three quarter view. And then I choose to do a rooster in that pose. I also chose to combined the references to make the color choices for the roosters eye. Then I chose my own color scheme for the rooster. I choose a light brown color scheme and contrasted it with a mint and turquoise colors and values. I did use a sources for my inspiration and combined it with my own ideas and color schemes with it, and made it original.

Color pencil/pastel techniques

Today we used different materials to blend colors. One of the materials we used was an oil pastel. You use this by starting with the medium value and go in whatever direction the shape goes. Then  you add the dark value increasing pressure if you want a darker value. Then you add the white value. When you use oil pastel it is important to have multiple layers to get the value you want. We also used color pencils. I used the prisma color pencil because they have brighter led and are softer to work with.  This material requires a specific pressure to get the specific value you want. You press really hard to get a darker value and press lightly to get a light value. We also used chalk pastels. With these you can you your finger to blend the values. Also multiple layers are required to get the  value you need too.

Character Develop Final

         For my final drawing of my two character and their environment I choose to have the bad character, the yak, steal Clarie's hat who is the good character. I choose to have the yak escape his pen, ad implied by the broken wire on the fence. I also chose to draw Claire running out the door to catch her yak and get her get back in his pen with her lasso.  For her house I choose to draw it as a log cabin to give a rustic feel. I also chose to give it a red roof because, in my opinon red is the color you think of when u say farm. I used water color for the sky and mad it darker on the yak's pen side to give it an omnuious feel. The materials I used for this project were, watercolor Prisma pencils, and water color. Overall, this project allowed me to explore my creativeness and come up with some of my own ideas and bring them to life.

Good and Bad Characters and Environments for Character Design Project

I wanted a story you wouldn't normally think of, so for my two characters so I picked two natural enemies, a cowgirl and a yak. In their story this girl named Claire is a farmer. She is the good character because she is really sweet and cares for all her animals. She is living on a farm with her family. However there is one stubborn animal on the farm, her yak.

The yak is the bad character because he is always making trouble on the farm. Weather he is harassing the other animals or making his pen a mess he is always causing trouble for Claire. In the final product the two characters are going to interact by,  the yak steals her cowgirl hat and escapes the pen, then Claire trys to lasso the yak and get her hat back. I choose a red collared shirt  for Claire to give her a western style and I choose to have her live in a peaceful happy-looking barn to give a lot of contrast to the yaks pen. I choose to hav dead trees, a dark sky, and  dead grass in the yak's pen to emphasize that the yak was the bad character. Also I gave the yak black beady eyes to make him look intimidating.

Look At That Animal Move

       

         For this piece I used Prisma-color pencils. I used them to blend and color along with the shape to make texture. I also made sure to do one stroke at a time for the feathers so it would look realistic in the end. I made the different values with the color pencils by pressing harder for darker values and lighter for lighter values. I accomplished the goal of making the bird look like it was moving by drawing it in a launch position. I arched the shoulders back and leaned its body forward to give it the illusion of getting ready to spring into the air.  Using Prisma-color pencils helped my work because I was able to get brighter values and blend to get a 3D effect and also I was able to work with the values much easier. I had trouble with getting the darker values were the wing was folded and hunched back. I eventually used a black Prisma to get darker values and blended it out. Overall, I loved this project and enjoyed using the Prismas.

Figure Drawing Analysis

          The importance of scale and proportion in drawing is so the piece can have overall balance and look realistic. I used dark thick lines to show volume, while using light thick lines to show where the light was hitting it. We did many warmup exercises to help us; one we did was gesture drawings. The timed ones helped us understand that only a few lines were need to show the movement of the body. The ones were were were supposed to take more time on helped us to work on proportion and balancing the differnent elements of the body. I liked using different medias because it allowed me to experiment with  different materials. I think that experimenting with different medias helped my work because it allowed me to get darker with my values and be looser with my drawings. The struggles I had with this piece were, getting the body to look like it had form and mass and not just doing an outline. Overall I loved this activity and I think it helped me grow as an artist.

Oh the Places We Will Go, Project

When creating this piece I had tree ideas; Italy, France, and walking in the rain. I started to draw out my thumbnails of my ideas when I realized I could combine two of my ideas into one unique idea. I combined walking in the rain with Paris and had the idea to draw a girl from pairs waiting to come back home sitting by train tracks. I used pen for her umbrella, her hat, the rail road tracks, the Eiffel Tower, and for general shading techniques. I used marker for her coat, her suitcases, her hair, the grass, and the mountains in the distance.I used water color for the sky and the ground to give the effect that it was raining in the picture. Overall, my struggles were creating the tiles for the ground were she was sitting, and the rail road tracks. I think had a easier time shading her coat and her suitcases. I was proud of myself for drawing her hair in a way that gave the effect of having curly hair. Overall, this project let me experiment with pen and marker in different fun unique ways.

Interesting Point of View Drawing

            At first I wanted to draw a Alice in Wonderland tea set. but when I started looking at the backgrounds of Alice and wonderland and all the unique settings they had I wanted to draw that instead. I wanted to Incorporate some of the famous characters into my drawing and immediately thought of drawing the cat, however, I realized that he has been overdone so I settled for drawing the caterpillar instead. I also knew that I would have to draw many big extravagant flowers and mushrooms too. I chose the 1st point of view for this piece because I thought it would give more attention to the background and all it unique factors. I knew I had to be very creative if I was going to draw Alice in Wonderland so I exaggerated everything I could, I made the mushrooms huge, as well as the roses. I also gave each piece of my drawing very detailed shading so that each piece would pop. Also I gave each part of my drawing texture so my drawing would be unique and unforgettable.

           Value is important because in order to depict depth and add a realistic quality to drawings you have to add many values to your work. I feel like I achieved this quality of volume and 3D by adding value. I added darker values to where the bag was crumpled in and put lighter values for the parts of the bag that were being hit by the light source.  Also when a fold was in the bag I used darker values for the edge of the fold and put lighter values under the fold to make the fold look like it was 3D and coming off the page. I used the paper bag by crumpling it and the folding over the top of the bag to give it a unique fold. The hardest part of drawing the bag for me was the top and inside of the bag; I had a hard time depicting the drawing so it looked like you could really see inside the bag. The part I was most successful at was the front of the bag. I feel like I really depicted the folds and the overlapping of the folds well and did a good job at adding the dark values to the folded in parts of the bag. Overall, this project helped me grow in my shading abilities and taught me how to use the value scale correctly.

my overall thought with my game drawling was it was both fun and changeling. the back round of my game drawling was really hard to draw for me because everything was blurred together. Although using the water colors and light washes was fun. i also really enjoyed using the color pencils to blend together colors.

I feel very successful about this piece.  because I used lots of perspective, and value to make my drawling look 3D. the vanishing points, shadows, and the horizon line really helped me do this. i found that wend use the technique blending, and added highlights to my picture it made it look allot better.

what did not work in this project  was adding black washes to the border of my picture because it made it blur and you could not tell what it was. what did work was the techniquce  gradation

1. Describe the process you went through to change your object into the correct perspective to create the drawing. This is when you were in the lab. first we had to choose a everyday object, i chose a cupcake. then we went in to Photoshop and clicked on the transform tab and changed the scale to the whole canvas. then we took the corners to the picture and dragged them sideways so the picture was bigger on top.

2. How did distorting and stretching the object allow for you to create a drawing that would look different to the viewer?

 distorting and stretching the object made it look like it was standing up when you took a picture from a certain angle. or in other words it turned into an  anamorphosis drawling. it changed the perspective of the picture to 3D, or made it life like.

3. What were the most important concepts in the project to make it successful? 

the most important aspects of this drawling were, the grid, shadows, and value. how the grid was important is you had to draw it exactly the way it was on the photo otherwise the 3D effect would not work.  you could also add shadows to the object to make it more life like and seem like it standing off the page. value was a very important factor because it made it seem like the drawling had depth. you had to color in darker shades of the color on the edges of the shape by using colored pencils. overall, with the help of these aspects, and colored pencils the drawling transformed into a real life object.

1. Explain how you changed your photo in the lab to create a stencil. first in the threshold of our project, we added pixels to our photo, and made our photo black and white in Photoshop so we could choose how to cut the outline of our picture. then we had to make a stencil  by protecting our photo on a wall and tracing on to a piece of poster board. after that we picked whether to cut out the black or white i choose to cut out the white part of my photo by using a Xacto knife.  however it was important to have a frame around our stencil other wise our image would get lost in the back round of our collage. 

2. When creating the collage background explain your choices of colors, materials (magazine paper, books pages, etc), and placement. How does it relate to your topic? If no relation discuss general idea.

when i created my collage for my stencil of my punch buggy i picked color and images that would relate to hippies who are the type of person i would think would drive a punch buggy. because hypies wear tied allot i picked random bright colors i also picked flowers and neat designs which reminded me of the thing that would be associated with a punch buggy.

3. Discuss the way positive and negative space was used to create your stencil.

i pick the white space of my punch buggy to cut out, or positive space so my colors of the spray paint i chose would outline my photo. i also chose this so the black parts or negative space could make up the picture of the bug. also the negative space made all my details. the positive space however outlined them.

4. When using the xacto knife, explain the safety procedures, how to use the knife and any challenges you had to overcome while cutting. when using a xacto knife it is important to cut away from you because you could cut yourself if you don't. also it is important to have the blade tightly secured so it does not fall off. the most important thing is to have the parts directly underneath the knife to be secured, otherwise the knife will not work. i had a few times where i accidently cut my self because i was going to fast but other than that it was fine.

5. How was your experience with the spray paint? Discuss how color choice is important, placement of stencil, and any other concepts you noticed while creating this. 

when using the spray paint i used bright neon color and had Lacey fabrics that a sprayed over to create texture. the colors i chose were, pink, orange, purple, white, yellow, red, and blue. i out lined my stencil with purple at first to go with my theme of hippy style. but i figured out that it did not out line it very well and used black and faded it out into the purple which i think made a overall very good composition  and made a very nice contrast with the colors showing up inside the frame of my buggy..

1.     Describe the overall composition of your artwork (balance, unity, rhythm and movement).

      the overall, composition of my artwork was very balanced because i do not have too much blue or black overwhelming the print. you can see the fish clearly so i think my artwork turned out well. it seems like the fish is swimming which adds a life like quality to it.

  

2.     How did you add texture and contrast to your print? Is this important? Why?

      I added allot of contrast in my artwork.  for example i added the scales of the fish, and added texture to the fins of the fish and folded the fin up to give it a 3d look. it is important to have contrast  and texture so the people who view the print can can tell what it is and they don't get lost.

3.     Explain how you used positive and negative space to show your image.

      I used positive space to make up the body of my fish and the rocks and bubbles surrounding it. i used negative space to add details in my artwork. I also used negative space to outline my artwork so my fish was easy to see.

4.     Describe the craftsmanship of your print. (How good the project is technically crafted)

      The craftsmanship of my artwork was good overall. I did not get much ink on the sides of my print. also my line defined  my fish and were crisp and clear. my print stayed in the areas of the registry marks and was not tilted in anyway. so overall my print was neat and well crafted.

5.     Were you able to achieve depth by showing a foreground, middle ground and back- ground? Explain.

      I was able to achieve depth in my print. i was able to achieve creating a foreground by curving the fish so that it would look like it was swimming towards you. i was also able to achieve a background by makeing the rocks get smaller and smaller. making it appear that they descend into the background. i was able to achieve a middle ground by flipping the fin of the fish up to give it a 3d look.

6.     Explain your experience with Printmaking. What were the obstacles and advantages

I loved print making. It was a different unique change from the usual paper and pencil. i had a few obstacles with printmaking  because it was hard to make the linoleum cut deep enough so it would not appear on the final print.  the advantages were that you did not have to re-draw each print you just had to ink it on and put it on the paper.

Print Sketch Critique

1. Why is texture so important to have in your sketches?

 textchure is important to have in sktches, because it make the drawling come to life. it also adds more detail to help other define what the part of the  drawing are. For example the bark on a tree or feathers on a bird. texture overall, adds detail and a relistic quality that most wouldnt have if they did not include textchure.

2. Why is it neccessary for you to have several references of each animal and each background? Explain.  it is necessary to have many references for each animal and back round, becuase you dont want to copy one photo that is copying their work. it also helps if part of the animal or backround is cut off you can use some of the other photos the to fill it in.  you can also use details in many references to help make the animal more 3-D.

3. When you look at your sketches are you able to see which sketch is the strongest and will make the best print? How do you know this? i am able to see which  drawling would make the best print. i can do this by looking at the amount of postive and negtive space in the photo. you dont want to have too mush detail in the animal and in the backround because then it will be hard to destingush the animal from the back round. for example i think i am going to do the drawling of my betta fish, becuase the fish its self has allot of detail. while the rocks around the fish have less detail around it. however there is not allot of detail for the backround of the fish, so the best chioce for the print making  is my bird that i skecth drew becuase it has allot of detail but is not overpowering the bird which should be the center of the print.

1. Explain your experience working on a team and executing your ideas for the mural.  in my group we first brain stormed many ideas. then we has to sckeacth out all of our ideas in 3by 2inch rectangles. our top two choices were, someone walking a dog, or a person with angel wings flying thorugh the night sky. we chose the angel wings because it was an orginal idea and we would have the most fun creating ways we could draw the wings and we felt that it was a more creative way people could interact with the art.

2. Explain the importance of collaboration when working on a team. it is important to work on a team and collaborate with them, because you can have more ideas. you can also get your mural done faster. it is aslo important to have collaboration on a team because if you are all agruing with every one you will never get your work done and you will waste time and eventually get a bad grade. 

 

3.  How successful was this project? Explain how and why.  this project was really susseful for me and my group because every one was able to interact with our artwork. we also were sucessful with making our wings look relistic and 3-D.  our project was also a sucess because we made the secene easy to interact with and made it come to life, so overall our project was a success. 

4. Explain how you feel about creating artwork that others can interact with. Ex. Invoving the whole school?  i loved creating  artwork that people could interact with. it was different from the regluar artwork that im use to doing. which was drawling in a skecth book. i think  that making a interactive artwork peice is fun and interesting and easy to do with just a little bit of creativety and chalk.

1. Explain the process you went through to develop your drawing.

the process we went to develop my drawing is we had to get a sheet of trace paper and put it over the black and white photo of the person we were drawing. then we had to hold it up to a light source and outline all the values we saw in the face. not the features of the face like the nose. after we had finished outlining all the values in the photo, we covered the other side of the trace paper with graphite. after that we placed the trace paper on a blank page of our skeacth book and retraces all of the values on the trace paper so the face of the person we were drawing would transfer over. after we transferred it we began to fill in the values of the picture trying not to go to dark to fast. after we had done that we were finished.

2. Explain how you found the different values in the portrait?

 I found the different values in the portrait by using our portable shading chart which had 8 boxes of shading going from white to black. i then macthed the vales in the picture to one of the boxes in my shading chart. after i macthted the color to one in the shading chart i colored in the value it macthed  and shaded with the shapes of the features of the face making the values blend together to make it 3d.

3.  Did you achieve a full range of the different values within your portrait?  How?

yes i did make a full range of values of my picture. i did this by, looking at the lightest and darkest part of the picture and colored them as applied. i also used all of the values in between by machining up the value that fit best to the value in the picture and colored it the value as it applied.

4. Describe your craftsmanship.  Is the artwork executed and crafted neatly?

i think that my drawing turned out very good and it has the aspect of looking 3d. i tyred my hardest so, i believe that my artwork looks the way its supposed to and it straight to the point so i think that i executed it very well and it turned out beautifully. my artwork was done to the best of my ability there were no stray marks and it blended all together so i believe it is very neat.

5. List any obstacles you had to overcome and how you dealt with them.

i had trouble with getting the hair dark in certain parts. after many try of shading more i figured out that if you pressed down on the pencil harder the line became darker, and it also helped if you shaded with the way the hair grows to give a life like aspect.

 1.Describe your overall thoughts on the final piece? i thought my final oil pastel drawing was very detailed in the shadows and the quality of light wasgood and made them apper 3D. however, i could have done more work on the square because it dint define the shape enough.

2. if this was a group project, what was your contribution?

3. How successful do you feel this piece is and why? i feel very sucessful when i finshed this project because my sphere looks like a ball you could grab off the paper. but my square could use more detail.

4. What worked about this project? What didn’t work? what worked when i was doing this project is shading with the shape and starting with the middle color first, also blending the colors helped me a lot. what dint work is on the square i was trying to shade on side at a time  and it dint make it pop.

5. If you were to do this project over again, what changes would you consider making? i would put more lightness in my cone and square and give more detail in the shadow of the square.

6. What was the most difficult part about completing this piece and why? the most diffulcult part about this project was figuring out how to make the shapes pop off of the page.
